So - at 36K miles I figure I ought to change the differential and transfer case fluids as there are no records of them having been done Car is still under warranty, and dealer records show oil and brake fluid changes as specified. Differential changes were no big deal, other than having to suck the oil out thru the fill plug on the rear diff since there is no drain plug.

I used an extractor. No big deal, I'll just use the extractor again, right.

NOPE - according to the Bentley manual "BMW specifies that the transfer case must first be removed to drain the oil thru the transfer case vent". So the manual then reads "Flip Transfer case over and drain fluid out from the vent hole" with a nice photo of an upside down transfer case.

Apparently there isn't any way to extract via the fill hole, in fact it tells you not even to pour it out of the fill hole. And then perform the "Repair" service function using a Diagnostic tool. But I don't think I'll be dropping the transfer case for an oil change anytime soon. Any short cuts? Appreciate 0. Brigadier General. Originally Posted by dmcxii. However, common problems such as transfer case failure can put a damper on the driving experience, even if it is something that many drivers encounter each year.

Cars that are designed with all-wheel-drive AWD or four-wheel drive depend on the transfer case to transport the power that the transmission generates to the appropriate axles of the car.

With the help of the drive shafts, this is the main purpose of the transfer case and the reason for its importance in your BMW. In a BMW, keeping all the wheels of the car working smoothly with one another is an essential task — and without the transfer case working properly it can lead to seriously noticeable performance issues that must be addressed right away to restore your BMW and prevent further damage from occurring.

Transfer case failure often exhibits concerning symptoms that can help the driver and their BMW specialist determine what the original cause of the problem is and how to fix it.

All cars including BMWs utilize various fluids that perform different functions for the engine and other systems, such as brake and coolant fluids. All fluid leaks are highly concerning, as they usually indicate your car is in need of repair. BMWs engines are relatively quiet, but the noises you do hear should be consistent. Transfer case symptoms are often misdiagnosed and attributed to another failing transmission component.

The transfer case components should always be considered when addressing symptoms of transmission or gear-shifting problems.

Because of the narrow applications we don't have a recommended alternative to the Mobil fluid. In our experience, it outperforms even fresh factory fluid, especially in colder temps. The "Lifetime" has never been fully explained and we don't buy into it, especially when fresh fluid typically makes a huge improvement in shift quality and smoothness.

There are discernible differences between them and LT-2 has the strongest following among enthusiasts. Our observations are that these LT fluids are acceptable in normal day-to-day driving and in cold temperatures but are permanently affected by high temps, such as on track.

The clutch discs are immersed in the same oil used to lubricate the transmission internals. The wet clutch system ensures smooth operation and engagement.

Transfer Case Fluid - 1 Liter

We don't buy in to the lifetime fluid policy and have experienced the benefits of fresh fluid on our daily and track cars. Red Line DCTF is an upgraded formula that works on normal street cars and holds up better for sustained track time.

With more power or higher heat the fluid thins out and breaks down which causes the clutches to slip. A stronger oil like the Red Line fluid will not break down as easily at higher temps.

There is no doubt that fresh fluid will perform better than used and dirty fluid. However, most of the problems we hear come from an improper transmission flush where particles and debris block fluid flow or from failing to set the correct fluid level after.

This is also the most common ATF you will find at auto parts stores it's compatible with most GM and Ford auto transmissions. If your car is serviced at the dealer they will likely install D6. BMW recommends using only the same fluid in the transmission when topping off the oil level.

They do not recommend mixing ATF oil brands and specs so keep track of what oil is in your transmission. Contrary to what's written online, the ZF 6HP can be serviced with a full oil pan and gasket kit available.

However, professional servicing is recommended due to the precise procedures required. Cars that originally used D6 cannot use D4 all 6- and 8-speed automatics so keep track of what oil is in your transmission. The ZF 8HP can be serviced with a full oil pan and gasket kit available.

This is a chain-driven transfer case mounted on the back of the transmission with a driveshaft extending from the front and rear of the housing.

The front differential is a traditional hypoid gear design very similar to the rear differential but in a smaller size. The ATC transfer case has a proprietary blend and we do not offer an alternative at this time. Nearly all non-M models use an open differential and rely on traction control to limit wheel spin. Vintage models and M cars use some form of limited-slip - clutch-type, viscous, or Torsen designs.

This must have been part of a larger effort to switch to full synthetic instead of mineral-based oils. The 75W weight is strange to us but it's the only gear oil listed in BMW's official fluid guide for these differentials. Our new to us X3 is overdue for fresh transfer case fluid. My wife loves the car, and has racked up 10K in the last few months clocking past the 84, mark.

The BMW dealer is hours away. This module reset thing brings up a bunch of coding questions. Can the Transfer Case be reset adaptation? Will they perform this seemingly simple task? Trouble is Only use the BMW fluilds in the transfer box. I think standard tools 12 Ediabas 7.

Since I'm not highly motivated to tweak the cars behavior much I could see having it honk once when the doors are locked or add 3 flashes for the lane change blinker, etc. Nothings is irking me greatly.

Sometimes you don't want to drag out the laptop, the cables, change the battery, update Windows, try to remember your password, shunt the hair around to fit the adapter etc.

After reading this post, and seeing that replacing the transfer case fluid is a maintenance item at a giving miles, is the resetting just setting the miles to next change? Looks like this is almost like the oil change service lights. Do you have a light on the dashboard or a service notification showing? It may not be super critical to reset it.

It's certainly better off running with new fluid and old settings than old fluid. No, it's something more than that. The reset process exercises the actuator to gauge the current degree of wear on the clutch plates and adjusts the ongoing force applies accordingly - based on the fluid now having been refreshed with designed viscosity and other properties. Hard to say exactly what is the effect of omitting this step.

Yea, as Supercourse was saying, this is not service light reset deal particularly because BMW pretends this fluid should not need changing. Learn More.Dear all, E91, xi, 2. I have changed the oil, but I am not able getting rid of the error code. I was trying with DIS delete the error code, but it comes up again after a few minutes I was reading other posts somewhere else that it should be possible with DIS, but do you know is there a special procedure - how to do it?

I was as well resetting the whole ECU unit in transfer case but still resistor value on oil state does not get changed I used DIS 5. Oil should already have been changed. You do the quick test which gives the X by transfer case, highlight the transfer case, continue and run the system test. That gives the option to change the fluid and reset the case. You choose this and you can hear the case going through some movement presumably moving the clutches for resetting.

After you repeat the quick test and see the X on transfer case and choose clear all. Now it's cleared. At least that's how it worked for me. I'd changed the oil twice without reset due to ignorance of the need for it. I really do think it's a good idea to do for long term transfer case health. There is an x drive sub forum here. I have silly question.

I have changed transmission oil 30K miles ago but never reset any light etc may causing this issue. I have XI. Yes its different it's a whole different module. And you must use the BMW transfer case fluid when doing it no substitutes. It is the x drive basically. Thanks a Lot. This dis software is a pain. Slow, clunky and completely unintuitive. Anyway I open up disv Connect to my car. Run a quick test and I get an "! Not an x. And then I'm stuck. You should be using ISTA.

Technically, DIS should not work with and newer models. But people have been able to hack together data for it to work for post models. Terms of Use. Privacy Policy.
