So - at 36K miles I figure I ought to change the differential and transfer case fluids as there are no records of them having been done Car is still under warranty, and dealer records show oil and brake fluid changes as specified. Differential changes were no big deal, other than having to suck the oil out thru the fill plug on the rear diff since there is no drain plug.
I used an extractor. No big deal, I'll just use the extractor again, right.
NOPE - according to the Bentley manual "BMW specifies that the transfer case must first be removed to drain the oil thru the transfer case vent". So the manual then reads "Flip Transfer case over and drain fluid out from the vent hole" with a nice photo of an upside down transfer case.
Apparently there isn't any way to extract via the fill hole, in fact it tells you not even to pour it out of the fill hole. And then perform the "Repair" service function using a Diagnostic tool. I was as well resetting the whole ECU unit in transfer case but still resistor value on oil state does not get changed I used DIS 5. Oil should already have been changed. You do the quick test which gives the X by transfer case, highlight the transfer case, continue and run the system test. That gives the option to change the fluid and reset the case. You choose this and you can hear the case going through some movement presumably moving the clutches for resetting.
After you repeat the quick test and see the X on transfer case and choose clear all. Now it's cleared. At least that's how it worked for me. I'd changed the oil twice without reset due to ignorance of the need for it. I really do think it's a good idea to do for long term transfer case health. There is an x drive sub forum here.
